apple pie
Well, I’m doing something I didn’t want to do… a food post! I just can’t help it! It’s so exciting to try something new and apple pie was unchartered territory. I make some killer mini pecan tarts with cream cheese crusts, chewy walnut raisin oatmeal cookies, a 4th generation 6 flavor pound cake, and snackable pecan cheddar cookies that get requested every Christmas. No apple pie… until today.
The bf said he wanted one and who am I to deny giving it a shot? We browsed through my favorite recipe site – Epicurious. (It’s all the recipies from Gourmet and Bon Appétit magazines.) We settled on a good old fashioned apple pie. The recipe we used was for a mix of different types of apples but I like the tartness* of Granny Smiths so, off to the grocery store we went. I didn’t even have a pie pan and I don’t have a food processor so, I bought a pastry blender as well. Oh, and a makeshift rolling pin was fashioned out of a wine bottle.

The changes I made to the recipe: all Granny Smith apples, added a 1/4 teasp. of cinnamon, didn’t use graham cracker crumbs in the bottom, did not glaze with milk or top with raw sugar. There’s enough butter in this pie to kill a horse but hey, it’s the weekend, and I’m allowing myself a small break from my diet.
Just a note - before you roll your dough out, pop it in the freezer for a bit after you’ve blended it and made two separate balls. Also, flour the hell out of your countertop. The butter warms up fast and makes it sticky and brittle so move quickly. I had to learn from my mistake, ball it all up and pop it in the freezer to start over 10 minutes later. Either way, I had to do quite a bit of patch work for the bottom and top crusts.
It was pretty labor intensive but it helped to get an organized strategy down.
Measure out and freeze your Crisco first. Cube your butter and measure out the rest of the crust ingredients and put them in a big bowl and place in the fridge until you’re shortening is frozen. Get your ice water ready.
Blend your crust mixture well until it’s fine and crumbly. Form two equal balls and place in the freezer.
Mix up your filling ingredients in another bowl. Peel and cut your apples and mix with the coating. Preheat your oven and let your apples sit for 15 minutes on your countertop while it’s warming up.
Roll out your first layer of crust (tons of flour on your countertop!) and line your pie pan and pop back in the fridge until that 15 minutes are up.
Dump your filling in the pie pan, dot with that 2T butter.
Roll out your top crust (more flour!), roll it onto your rolling pin and roll out on top of your huge mound of apples. Crimp the edges with a fork, decorate and pop it in the oven, following the rest of the baking instructions.
*If you don’t like a tart pie, either use different apples than Granny Smith or add about a 1/4 cup more sugar. With it being tart, it’s a great pie to serve with vanilla ice cream!
cold air hair repair
I don’t usually endorse products here and when I do, it’s always an easy to find, affordable item that I really love. Winter is on its way and that means static and frizz and dry brittle hair. One product I adore is Dove Advanced Care Moisture Therapy Replenishing Mist. It’s a light leave-in conditioner spray that helps reduce static and fly-aways. It’s also a great refresher if you don’t like to wash your hair every day but need a little boost of shine, softness and scent. You won’t feel like you have any product in your hair but you will feel and see a difference.
My hair is fine and bone straight and this doesn’t weigh it down or make it greasy. From the reviews, it’s also seems great for curly coarse hair and works as a detangler.
They’ve changed the name and bottle design. I’m still using the original baby blue bottle I bought last year. It really is a lifesaver, a very subtle soft lifesaver. At less than $5 a bottle, you won’t regret it.

how now brow?
Yesterday I was driving home and checked myself in the visor mirror. I realized my eyebrows were looking better than they ever have in my entire life. What was I doing differently? Well, since my bf and I moved in together, I have been plucking a lot less, and I had already worked towards a good arch a while back. After years of over-plucking, everything was starting to come together nicely.
Growing up, eyebrows were serious business. My mom had a flexible work schedule and pretty much took me everywhere she went. I would watch her get ready a lot of the time in front of her light-up vanity mirror and learned the ways of liquid eyeliner and eyebrow maintenance. She always told me to never pluck above your brows (I never listened and still think there are times when you must) and she plucked strays every single day to keep her brows tidy. She’s a fair heavily freckled red head with the finest of hairs. I am a fair lightly freckled brunette with coarse brows. Once I got started (because it’s really hard to go back once you start), if I didn’t maintain every day, it would look like someone had sprinkled black pepper on my lids. I’m also half Serbian and prone to a tragic unibrow so needless to say, I became a bit obsessed around the age of 13 when these things start to matter to a girl.
Not one to be bossy or overbearing, my mom pretty much let me think that I knew what I was doing, and figured I would have to learn from my own mistakes. The over plucking began. This was in the early 90s when my fashion icon was Kristen McMenamy. Not a good idea. I ruined myself.

Not until about 5 years later did I truly recover from the damage I had done, and broken all my bad habits, as I had learned a few things along the way.

Eyebrow trends are ridiculous. Trends come and go too rapidly to be able to recover from them as they pass through. No one is going to think you’re not stylish because you don’t have super thin or thick or straight across eyebrows that happen to be in at the moment. Classic and pretty has always been acceptable and always will be. (Or you could go super bushy… since it is all the rage these days, as Wendy B points out!) ;)

There are a few tricks to help guide you in achieving a good starting point, arch location, and end point.

The inner corner of each eye should be your starting point. Honestly, I would leave this for last since everyone’s eyes are spaced differently and you’ll know what’s most flattering. Just avoid a unibrow and keep things even, avoiding an angry look. Mine extend a bit over this point and it works for me.

Hold a pencil from the edge of the widest part your nose and angle it to the outer corner of each eye. This should be your end point and all stray hairs beyond this are fair game. This tip has always worked for me.

The outer edge of the colored part of your eyes should be where the highest part of your arch is. Everything should start descending latteraly from this point and tapering off to your end point in #2.

I am a devoted tweezer. A few of my girlfriends get theirs waxed regularly but their brows look awful in that growing out stage where they need to be long enough to even get caught by the wax. No way José. I would rather take a few seconds every day when I’m doing my makeup to simply catch a few dark hairs growing in than go a week or more looking that messy. Now, if you have never plucked your brows before or you are a hot mess and overwhelmed with the thought of getting your initial shape mapped out, I would totally let a professional have at it for the first attack. Just make it incredibly clear about what you want. Bring a picture. Go to a reputable salon. Read reviews online and ask around. (Threading is also an initial starting point option but I have never tried it and I believe you still need your brows to be grown out a bit for them to catch, just like waxing.)

There are a lot of eyebrow tools out there. There’s the upscale Anastasia line that includes stencils and all sorts of things making eyebrow maintenance feel a lot more complicated and expensive than it needs to be. Here is what I use:

Get a magnifying mirror with a light. You have to see what you’re doing. Hairs are tricky devils. I have plucked in natural light and everything seemed fine and then under store lighting, I caught a glimpse in a mirror and had missed a few big dark hairs that seemed to fade away earlier. You can get a decent Conair one for about $30 at Target. I do my makeup with it as well. The magnifying side is the devil. That which has been seen cannot be unseen.

Tweezers – different types of hair will respond differently to different types of tweezers. I can’t pull a damn hair out with mom’s tweezers and she can’t with mine. Some have straight tips, angled tips, wider flat interiors that hold onto the hair, textured interiors that hold onto the hair, some have a thinner metal that feels less bulky, etc. Everyone has a pair laying around. Try them out and if you can’t get a grip you need a different style. It should feel intuitive, an extension of your hand. The type that has always worked for me is a $3 Revlon Slant Tip.

Once you get your basic shape down, you may find that you need to fill in a few sparse spots with an eyebrow pencil/powder. Please don’t tweeze around to accomodate these bare areas. Your brows will look wonky. Just pretend they aren’t there while you’re getting your shape down and worry about filling in these little areas later. I use a $3 Rimmel brow pencil that has a tiny blending brush on the cap. It has never failed me in all the years I’ve used it. If you use a powder, get a small sharp angled brush if it doens’t come with one. Try to match your color as closely as possible and don’t leave any harsh lines with your product. Softly blend in the direction of your brows, keeping the color contained in the hair area but also soft.

I have a few long eyebrows that I sometimes have to comb up and barely trim with manicure scissors. To keep everything neat and in place all you need is some clear mascara. The cheapest $2 junk brand at the drug store will do just fine. Wipe off any excess clumps and brush over brows in the direction you need them to stay in. Some people spray a bit of hairspray on a tiny mascara brush.

Now that you have all the tools you need and a basic shape guideline, it’s up to you to show restraint and patience and practice a sense of symmetry. If you have to flip back and forth from one brow to the other to keep things even, then you must.

Pull the hair out in the direction that it grows – outward!

I promise you, tweezing becomes less painfull the more you do it. Ice up or use a tooth numbing agent like Baby Orajel if you have to at first. Carefully apply to brows only, let it sit for a couple minutes, wipe it off and pluck away!

Consider each hair carefully. Very Carefully. It can take up to 2 months for a brow hair to grow back completely.

The more you pluck, the less often you will have to over time. The constant trauma to the hair follicle will make them slowly give up.

Fall in the Fan
Last night we took a 3 hour walk around the Fan. The weather was perfect as we headed out right before the sun was setting. Not nearly enough people decorate for Halloween but that one block on Hanover Ave. was gearing up for the kiddies and it felt magical. Happy Halloween everyone!

I’m going to take a break from sharing awesome things with you, to talk about food.
First, let me tell you about my 2 cats. Ringo is about 9 years old. I received him when he was 2 weeks old, abandoned by his mother. The vet said he wouldn’t make it but we showed ‘em what was up! I bottle fed him every 4 hours for 6 weeks and he was my little champion. Ringo had and still has a love affair with food. He wanted to try everything I ate and I did the huge mistake of letting him have little tastes when he was young.
He is constantly hungry. He begs when I eat like he’s a dog. He cries all day and night for more, for treats, for tastes, for anything! This is all my fault.

Years ago, he got a terrible urinary tract infection… and another. He was placed on prescription cat food that he must remain on for the rest of his life. (He is susceptible to a type of crystal in his urine and has some anatomical issues.) The vet was negligent and kept him on the first treatment phase of Rx cat foot for way too long and he gained a TON of weight that he has been unable to get rid of. When I finally got him onto the 2nd phase of lifetime maintenance food, it was too late and he was and still is almost 30 pounds. Blood work has shown that he’s healthier than I am. He’s just a fat cat. I have tried to cut the daily intake of his cat food but that led to a big scare with some blood in his urine so he went back to the full portions and we just have to let him be fat and happy instead of trim and sick.
Now, my other cat Nibbles is different story. I got her from a rescue organization when she was completely weened at 8 weeks old. I learned from my mistakes in creating a food beggar and never offered her tastes. Her own cat food is sufficient. Her life doesn’t revolve around eating. She eats when she’s hungry, absolutely refuses human food, and her own kibble is simply a source of fuel and she gets on with life. I think there’s a lot to be said for this.

I have always been a petite person and I was able to eat whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted and nothing seemed to phase me. I was tiny and I made everyone around me sick. Then, as I approached 30, I noticed my metabolism changing a bit and I gained about 15 pounds that I’m totally fine with. I’ve held steady at about 120-125 (give or take depending) for about 4 years. I’m only 5′1″ but I feel like I look healthier and I feel more womanly. Sure, I think about shedding 5 vanity pounds once in a while but I haven’t really tried to do anything productive about it and as long as my size 27 J Brands still fit me, I’m okay. My body image is just fine.
Well, last year, I had my annual physical and my triglycerides were a bit high. I went nuts and all at the same time, I addressed my insomnia with meds (quit taking them), I quit smoking on Chantix (lasted 3 months), joined a gym (went a few times), saw a therapist (twice) and started eating healthier (for a while). I did too much too soon and lost momentum really fast. A few weeks ago I went for my latest physical and found out that my cholesterol (LDL-P to be exact) was at heart attack levels… seriously through the damn roof! It has scared the living hell out of me!
I guess for a good third of my food intake, I have eaten like a fat man at a Super Bowl party. Cheesesteaks, hot wings, cheesecake, hawaiian burgers, cheese, rare steak fromage, BBQ, more cheese, big bacony weekend breakfasts, blue cheese dressing, butter, whole milk, goat cheese pizza, mindless snacking, late night eating… oh my god cheese! Well, it’s all had to change. I was told I can’t exceed 30 grams of total fat a day for the next 6 months, until I get a follow-up test to determine if diet alone won’t work and I can thank my parents’ genes and get put on Lipitor like a friggin old person.
Do you know what 30 grams of fat a day looks like? 1 slice of cheese is about 8 grams. 3 slices of bacon is about 12. 2 tablespoons of peanut butter is 16. One lousy hotdog or a boneless skinless chicken breast is 15. This is not taking into account the gram here and the 2 grams there in just about everything else, which really adds up fast.
So yeah, I have to familiarize myself with all of these numbers and keep a running tally in my head all day long. I have to get the most nutritional bang for my bite. Why would I shove a piece of string cheese in my mouth at 6 grams of fat when I could have a filling, more nutritionally sound Morningstar Farms black bean burger on a wheat bun with bean sprouts, mustard, and a slice of low-fat provolone for about 10 grams? This is now my life. I’m okay with this. Really I am.
I started thinking about my cat Nibbles. Food is fuel. Plain and simple. Using food as a cure for boredom, or as a way to comfort myself was obviously killing me. I’m not a nut and I’m certainly not going to deny myself treats every now and then (because I would hate life) but instead of the entire Tiramisu (once in a blue moon), I will allow myself a few indulgent bites, savor them, and take the rest home for later. I have to make better choices when eating out and watch my portions. Doggie bags and leftover lunches will be my new best friend. I have to quit eating so quickly, quit eating until I’m uncomfortably full, and quit eating just because someone else is and I’m really not even hungry.
I have to find low-fat replacements for the things I love and simply eat less of it. Poultry instead of red meat, low/non-fat versions of everything, more fiber, oatmeal cereal oatmeal, fruit veggies fruit, vegan/vegetarian options, baked not fried, good fats over bad fats, grass-fed beef instead of corn fed beef when I HAVE to have a steak.
All of these choices are things I should’ve been doing a long time ago. I don’t know who I thought I was kidding. The lab tests don’t lie. They revealed my dirty little secrets of bad eating and now it’s time to take my heart back-considering heart disease is the leading killer of women, killing twice as many women as all forms of cancer combined! And it’s a silent killer. You can feel fine, be skinny as a rail, and drop like a sack of potatoes… a sack of buttery sour cream and bacon laden potatoes.
I’m not even going to get preachy and go into the ethical issues I have been battling with in my head in regards to food, well before the bad news hit. My whole life, I’ve been surrounded by vegans here in Richmond, some more aggressive than others in urging me to see videos of factory farm conditions, and the truth behind the food we eat. Let’s just say that I am going to try my best to avoid high fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated anything, antibiotic and hormone riddled meat, and animal products in general. I am going to be more open to educating myself about the better treatment of animals and stop living in denial simply because I love a good pork chop, and I’ll make better choices accordingly.
So, there it is. Nibbles is my hero and I will now look at food as sustenance rather than a source of entertainment and piggish indulgence.

Maybe it’s the cold weather creeping in that encourages snuggling, or the fact that I was dangerously deficient in vitamin D and the prescription my doctor gave me has been working wonders on my mood, or that my bf and I are approaching our 1 year anniversary and I couldn’t be happier… all of these things combined have me feeling a wee bit frisky!
- Someone posed the question to Apartment Therapy, asking about men’s cologne scented candles. My absolute favorite candle in the world is from Yankee Candle called Midsummer’s Night. It was a popular recommendation on that post and for good reason. It makes your home smell like delicious delicious man! (I like to pick up a few votives when I go to Ben Franklin Crafts.)
- In the 90s I had black velvet leggings and they were the softest things in the world. I wanted to cuddle myself. James from Too Many Tights and his made-to-order legging line Black Milk is releasing some that look a bit more shiny and luxurious but no less soft.
He says, “These are super comfy (two way stretch!), and super warm, and you’ll feel the need to keep touching your legs… which might feel a bit pervy at first.”
I think I need a pair for cozying up on the sofa on chilly nights. He’s even doing a special deal on them this week!
- Lolipop brand Chupa Chups are toying with an 18+ line of pops! Heehee!

- EckesRaie has a small set on Flickr of x-ray images from patients who lost some objects, as well as many other fascinating injuries. Ahahah!
- We always want to present our best self to the world. What about at home, when you’re lounging around with the man you love? Of course, you want to be comfortable most of the time but why not revamp that portion of your wardrobe now that it’s getting cooler? Simple every day things like switching from sweats to more snug leggings, and swapping out juvenile graphic tees for a deep V that shows a little skin, topped off with a snuggly soft cashmere cardi will make you feel a bit more polished, with no comfort lost. Then, throw in a few surprises. I can’t wait for my order from Yandy to show up any day now! Ridiculously cheap little nothings for a whole lot of fun!
- Fall is a good time to switch up your scents from fruity floral and light to something more deep and warm. Brown sugar, sandalwood, vanilla, musk, amber, spice, and orientals are the way to go. You will smell delicious!
- Simple cozy comfort foods that have a decadent mouth feel are fun way to indulge. An easy and inexpensive banana pudding and some hot Chai tea will get you feeling warm and fuzzy inside.

Yesterday, I needed new liquid eyeliner so, for the sake of convenience, I hit the CVS down the street to try some new applicators by L’oreal. One was the elongated felt tip Lineur Intense (love it) and the other was their Voluminous beveled edge felt tip marker style. Well, after opening the beveled one, it was obvious that the tip was not like it was shown on the packaging. It was round and blunt. No way was I getting cat’s eyes with that. So, I called the 800 number and I am pleased as punch with their customer service. It was obviously a manufacturing flaw and they were quick to remedy the situation with a free return mailing label and gift certificates. Hell yes!
Then, after adding my one new liner to my purse, I noticed how much crap I carry around with me! I like to be prepared for anything. If I had a pack mule to follow me around all day, I would probably carry around an emergency sewing kit, an extra pair of shoes, a mini blow dryer, a lint roller, a netbook, a clothing steamer, my perfume, a folding chair, a chess set, a hefty dslr camera, my cat, and snacks galore.
Instead, I carry a big bag. Not so big that I’m dwarfed by it but, a nice size to carry all of this:

- old as hell and just won’t die Nine West wallet
- silver glitter make up bag (really a pencil case I picked up for $1) containing high and low end products, all tried and tested and have never failed me- 2 mini moisturizers, Bare Minerals foundation, brush, compact, concealer, tweezers, eyebrow pencil, eyelash curler, lash comb, mascara, 2 liquid eyeliners, 2 eye shadow brushes, 4 shadows (TIGI, Bare Minerals, Revlon, Hard Candy quad)
- In a side pocket I have way too many lip glosses and lipsticks and lip liners and lip treatments – I have a problem.
- Helio Ocean phone (charging)
- cigarettes and lighter (in the livingroom)

no concept of time
The boy and I went tubing down 4 miles of the James River in Scottsville, VA yesterday. I have to say it was one of the most relaxing magical days I’ve had in years and I wish we had done it sooner and more often this summer.
We left Richmond around 11am and took the 1.5 hour drive west to Scottsville. The drive was so nice. 50 miles on 64W and then the rest was on twisty country roads, the kind I adore driving on. We easily found James River Reeling and Rafting and got registered, moved the car next to the river where we would be ending our trip and put on our sunscreen and waited for the bus to be ready. They have 3 old school busses and they stagger the drop offs so there isn’t a huge amount of people entering the river at once. The bus drive alone was hilarious… like we were about to be part of a cheesy horror movie, 20 people on an old bus speeding down dirt roads with pop music playing. Good grief.
We were dropped off at an opening to the river in the middle of nowhere and picked out our tubes from a pile. A guy fixed up a tube just for our cooler with a net of rope on the bottom and we tied our 3 tubes together and got into the water. Everyone managed to command their own spot on the river, respecting some personal space, and we began our quiet little trip. There were large groups, families, small groups, couples, and kayakers.

The river was really low and slow yesterday (about 3 feet) and perfectly warm and clear. You could see the bottom of the river the entire 4 hour trip. The James is rocky and we got beached a few times on rocks that were just below the surface. We hit a few little fast currents but nothing to brace yourself for. There was also a lot of river grass and pale brown rocky sand dotted with baby clams slowly moving below us. I only saw one bass but tons of jewel toned dragonflies. The weather was perfect and we got plenty of relief with fluffy clouds. We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day. Without phones or watches, we had zero concept of time… something I never get to experience in my life.

The banks on either side were awesome – really steep and about 4 feet of exposed tree roots extending from the water. We passed a few tiny magical islands. I was concerned about bringing my camera but I think I could get away with it next time if the river is as slow as it was yesterday. So, I didn’t take these pics.
I was pretty bummed when we saw the bridge, since that’s where we would have to end our trip. I also somehow forgot to bring a dry pair of pants and had to drive home sitting on a garbage bag. Also… don’t reapply sunscreen with wet hands. It kinda defeats the purpose. My thighs are feeling quite warm right now.
Being a fidgety person, it was nice to be forced to just relax for a few hours and do absolutely nothing. I couldn’t have had a better tubing partner and I think it was good practice for our trip to the beach in a couple weeks where we will be doing A LOT of relaxing. I can’t wait!
time machine

I have often wondered how I will look when I get older. I have a hard time referring to my mother for anything beyond wrinkles since she has red hair, green eyes and freckles. My father is Serbian and he has given me a darker complexion. They both gave me a nose.
The one person I turn to with hope is Anjelica Huston, who I believe I will look very similar to a few decades down the road.
I once read an interview with her where she admitted that she was thankful she didn’t heed the advice of Hollywood agents and get a nose job, that she had learned to love herself for who she was. I think of her when I get a bit down on my looks.
I hope to be so stunning and powerful.
